Meet Mae and Allen of Maeflower, Floral Design and Event Planning I Winsome Rose Journal

Mae and Allen have always had a deep love for nature and an eye for design, and Mae has always wanted to help people celebrate life by experiencing the beauty of flowers and the joy of wholesome social events. These passions inspired Mae to start her business and become a florist and event planner. Now, her portfolio is brimming with a vast range of experience from weddings to non-profit fundraisers and themed parties to corporate conventions—she’s done it all!

Located in Springville, Maeflower services Utah County and Salt Lake Valley, but Mae also loves to travel to execute beautiful and unforgettable events in new and exciting places. Mae truly loves her clients, and that love shines through in every single, one-of-a-kind design she creates.

From Mae Allen, Owner  and Designer of Maeflower

Two and a half years ago, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, with an emphasis in event planning. My dream was to be an event planner for Disney, which has now evolved into a dream of at least living close enough to Disneyland or Disney World to go there on any given day. I’m a total Disney nerd!

A year after I graduated from college, I decided to go to floral school to receive my floral license. I thought floral design skills would pair well with my event-planning skills, because almost every event I’ve ever planned or attended has flowers! I’ve also always been a flower lover from the time I was a child helping my dad in our gardens. He always managed to grow such an abundance of gorgeous blooms, even in the scorching heat of the Arizona sun. Every day, I’d play in the yard and climb our 48 trees, swim in our pool surrounded by huge, tropical plants, and blissfully walk through our gardens picking flowers. Nature is my happy place because I feel closer to God when I’m surrounded by His pure and perfect creations.

After I finished floral design school, I planned my friend’s entire wedding and I did her wedding flowers. This was the first time I’d ever done that many floral arrangements and I was a bit overwhelmed and I felt like I was so slow and not very good at it. I didn’t do another wedding for 6 months because I was so intimidated. Six months after my first wedding, I heard of someone else who was getting married so I bravely offered to do the flowers, even though I was terrified! This wedding went a lot more smoothly and I started gaining more confidence in my floral design abilities.

A few months later, I was completely booked for the summer of 2015 with wedding planning and wedding flowers, and my husband Allen and I officially started our own business and named it “Maeflower.” By the middle of that summer, I was busy enough to quit my full-time job and focus all my attention on Maeflower. I never thought I’d be able to start and run my own business, but it is the best job I’ve ever had! I absolutely love controlling my own hours and doing something creative in a field that I’m passionate about.

There are still definitely times when I want to give up. I have moments of frustration where I feel like I’m not very talented or that it’s too stressful to be working 16 hour days on the weekends or that I sometimes end up not making money on some events because of my miscalculations (or my being a pushover and giving crazy discounts haha). It is definitely a lot of work to have your own business, but it still has been worth it for me and my husband. We love being part of the happiest day of people’s lives and contributing to that happiness. We love bringing beauty to an event. We love the creativity and excitement of the floral and wedding industry.

Our floral design style is a flowing, garden-picked look with lots of texture. We also love to use a mix of different bold and soft to make an event pop. If we had one piece of advice to give to brides picking out their wedding flowers, we’d suggest to not be afraid of color! Color really adds so much life and dimension to your wedding and will look amazing in all of your pictures, especially against your white or ivory dress. Our advice to other vendors in the industry would be to not be afraid of chasing your dreams! We fully believe that anyone can do or become anything they want!
